Get involved with Women for Independence
There are lots of ways you can get involved with Women for Independence, whether you want to become active in your local group, or just receive our monthly newsletter.
WFI members elect the National Committee every two years and have a say in the running of the organisation. Joining will give you access to the Members Only area of this website, where we post minutes of meetings and other reports, as well as resources for local groups to use. We send out occasional e-mails to members only, and we are totally reliant upon membership fees to keep the organisation going.
We send out a short newsletter by e-mail updating on our latest news and views. This is usually about once a month. You don't need to be a member to sign up for the newsletter; you don't even need to be a woman.
Whether you're a member or not, we are always really grateful to receive donations to help us keep going. In particular, we'd love it if you would consider making a small regular monthly donation, as then we know that we can keep going month after month.
We have local groups across Scotland. Find out more about your local group and maybe even join them! You are welcome to get involved with as many local groups as you like. You'll find contact details for all our local groups on the page if you want to get in touch with them directly.
Would you like to start a local group yourself? - We can help you with that too. Groups are able to organise as it suits them, some meet regularly, others on a more casual basis and the decide what activities that they want to do. The provision of your personal data to us is voluntary. However without providing us with your personal data, you will be unable to stand for election to the WFI National Committee, vote in our elections, register for our events, buy products from us online, become a member of WFI, apply for some volunteering or employment opportunities with us or be our contact person with our local groups.
Who is collecting the data?
1. WFI directly collect information from you that you give us when you register on our website.
2. Cookies on our website identify you when you visit our website to enable us to personalise your online experience by remembering your log in details.
3. If you pay your membership online, make an online donation to us or buy products from us online then these details are used by our payment processors to administer the payment. We use Stripe and Paypal for online transactions. They are third party payment services providers and we reccommend that you readtheir privacy policies before entering into any transactions with us.
4. Some people pay their membership or make donations directly into our bank account. We hold the details that are provided on our bank statements regarding your payment(s).
What data is being collected?
We collect any or all of the following when you register with us - name, email address, postal address, phone number, social media identity. You select what information that you want to give us. If it is appropriate and necessary to administer transactions, we may also collect debit/credit card details or your bank account details.
What is the legal basis for processing the data?
Consent – the data subject whom the personal data is about has consented to the processing.
We will ask for your consent to use your information to send you emails such as newsletters containing WFI news, information, events and fundraising.
Contractual – processing is necessary for the performance of a contract with the data subject or to take steps to enter into a contract.
Contractual interactions include processing personal information so that we can enter contractual relationships with people. For example, if you apply for employment or volunteer with us, if you purchase something from us or buy tickets to our events. Most of our interactions are voluntary rather than contractual ones however.
Legal obligation – processing is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation.
Occasionally we will be obliged to process your personal information due to legal obligations which are binding on us.
Legitimate interests – processing is necessary for purposes of legitimate interests pursued by the business or a third party, except where such interests are overridden by the interests, rights or freedoms of the data subject.
Applicable law allows personal information to be collected and used if it is reasonably necessary for our legitimate activities (as long as its use is fair, balanced and does not unduly impact individuals’ rights). We will rely on this ground to process your personal data when it is not practical or appropriate to ask for consent.

When we use your personal information, we will consider if it is fair and balanced to do so and if it is within your reasonable expectations. We will balance your rights and our legitimate interests to ensure that we use your personal information in ways that are not unduly intrusive or unfair in other ways.
Will the data be shared with any third parties?
We endeavour to ensure that there are appropriate and proportionate technical and organisational measures to prevent the loss, destruction, misuse, alteration, unauthorised disclosure or of access to your personal information. Your information is only accessible by appropriately trained staff, volunteers and contractors.
Information will not be passed onto a third party except where you are paying for Women for independence membership, buying tickets to our events or goods from us online or we are legally obliged to pass it on.
How will the information be used?
1. If you have consented to us contacting you then we will use this information to keep you updated on news and information about WFI. This might include general news and information, products that you can purchase from us, membership and elections to the WFI National Committee and the results of these elections, WFI events, opportunities to volunteer or work with WFI and information about organisations we think would be of interest. We normally contact you by email however we occasionally use postal address or phone if we cannot contact you by email or need an urgent response.
2. To administer any donation or other payment you make via credit/debit card, cheque, standing order or BACS transfer.
3. When we collect payments from you and send statements and/or receipts to you.
4. So we can adminster your employment and/or volunteering application.
5. So we can deal with enquiries and complaints made by or about you relating to the website or us in general.
6. To audit our accounts.
Do we hold children’s data
We do not knowingly process data of any person under the age of 16. If we come to discover, or have reason to believe, that you are 15 and under and we are holding your personal information, we will delete that information within a reasonable period and withhold our services accordingly.
How long will the data be stored for?
Once your data is no longer required in connection with the purpose(s) for which it was collected and/or is processed, we remove your personal information from our records five years after the date it was collected. If before that date your personal information is no longer required in connection with such purpose(s), (ii) we are no longer lawfully entitled to process it or (iii) you validly exercise your right of erasure, we will remove it from our records at the relevant time.
In the event that you ask us to stop sending you direct marketing/fundraising/other electronic communications, we will keep your name on our internal suppression list to ensure that you are not contacted again.
What rights does the data subject have?
You have the right to know what information we hold on you.
You have the right to have inaccurate personal data rectified, or completed if it is incomplete.
You have the right to have personal data erased.
You have the right to request the restriction or suppression of you personal data. You have the right to data portability which allows individuals to obtain and reuse their personal data for their own purposes across different services.
It allows them to move, copy or transfer personal data easily from one IT environment to another in a safe and secure way, without affecting its usability.
You have the right to object to the processing of your personal data in certain circumstances. Individuals have an absolute right to stop their data being used for direct marketing.
